to learn more about why a northern virginia man may have staged a violent incident at johns hopkin hospital in baltimore. it turns out the gunman was likely distraught over his mother's condition gentleman the incident began at the hospital around 11:00 yesterday morning. the gunman and his mother are said to be from arlington. police say paul warren pardus pulled a gun and shot his mother's doctor while the surgeon updated him on his mother's condition. pardus barricaded himself in his mother's eighth floor hospital room killing his mother and then himself. for more than two hours, no one knew what was happening inside. >> my boss came running in and he told me exactly what happened, that there was a guy running around with a gun and to stay put. it was scary just knowing that machine -- someone is on the outside on a rampage with a gun in a hospital where we're supposed to be protected. >> reporter: police had originally identified par stay with us -- pardus as warren davis but he says he changed his name. >>> four metro access drivers accused of sexual assaults against disabled

maryland license plates. >>> also making headlines being homes in a virginia subdivision reduced to rubble. now, firefighters want to know what started this massive fire in manassas. as many as 16 people have been forced from their homes because of this fire. the fire broke out around 3:30 yesterday afternoon along tillot loop. one woman was taken to the hospital from just the shock of seeing her home burned to the ground. it took firefighters an hour and a half to bring that blaze under control. they believe the fire started in the middle house and then quickly spread in both directions from there. now, again, three homes were destroyed. five others were damaged. and the red cross is helping displaced families find temporary shelter. still no word on what started a fire that killed a virginia mother and two of her children. ally anderson saved three of her children as her lorton town home burned on wednesday. she managed to lower them out a window down to their uncle but then she went back to get her youngest sons but neither she nor her sons made it out. neighbors tried to help ou

chance to start their season 3-0, west virginia played the role of spoiler. would the mountaineers be able to pull it off again this year. we start in the first quarter first drive second and goal at the maryland 6th. smith lobs it to austin for the td. austin the baltimore native burning them early. they take the 7-0 lead. west virginia gets the ball back and again smith to austin. the five yard score puts them up 14 on 0. to the third quarter they go the terps now down 28-0. but they are on the comeback trail. robinson goes deep and connects with tory smith for a 60-yard td pass. the terps are coming back. they are now down 28-7. still in the third the same score and it is robinson looking to go deep yet again. and guess who we have got? tory smith racks up 149 receiving yards on the day. this 80-yard td brings maryland to within two scores. it is now 28-414. under a minute to play in the third robinson is looking for the magic with smith again. but the third time is not a charm. he drops the pass in the end- zone. maryland never recovers. they lose 31-17. >>> virginia tech looking

and we'll talk to her in just a few minutes. over in virginia, the governor has also declared a state of emergency. residents and visit iters have been ordered to leave hatteras on the outer banks. >> certainly a formidable hurricane. maximum winds have increased 145 miles per hour, gusted to about 170. it continues to intensify and deepen. i don't think it will get much stronger than this but this is a very powerful storm. thank goodness, it won't directly make landfall. we'll talk first about current conditioned. i mentioned to you it is trekking off to the north and northwest at about 17 miles per hour. now, centered 410 miles south of cape hatteras, north carolina. it looks like it will be right off the the coastline there of north carolina a little later tonight. we'll gradually see conditions deteriorate there. want to push onto hd radar, show you the wave heights. this is very impressive stuff. see the dark purple. that is right underneath the storm. wave heights are measured at about 33 feet. so that gives you an idea of how powerful the storm is even pushing up towards cape h
